uma música para o fim de semana - I Still Haven't found What I'm Looking For (U2)

Anteontem, no dia 9 de Março, fez 36 anos do lançamento (em 1987) de um dos álbuns seminais da história da música pop/rock e dos U2: Joshua Tree. Vendeu cerca de vinte e cinco milhões de cópias.

Nunca fui um grande fã deles, continuo a não ser, mas se tivesse que escolher um álbum preferido da discografia desta banda irlandesa, seria Joshua Tree.

Tenho lido que a critica não o considera como um dos seus melhores álbuns. Mas enquanto não fã dos U2, o facto de quase todas a músicas terem passado até à exaustão nas rádios e alguém me ter gravado uma cassete com o álbum integralmente gravado fez com que ele se tornasse o mais conhecido de todos para mim.

War e Unforgettable Fire estão também entre os meus favoritos, mas após Joshua Tree desinteressei-me dos U2.

O tema que abre o álbum -  Where the Streets Have no Name - é talvez o meu preferido. 

Conta a história deste trabalho que o seu produtor, o enorme Brian Eno, nunca gostou da forma como este tema estava arranjado e que se preparou para as regravar tendo sido o engenheiro de som que terá salvo as gravações originais ao não permitir que isso acontecesse.

Uma outra curiosidade associada a Joshua Tree é a árvore que aparece nas fotos que compõem o álbum não está como usualmente se pensa no parque nacional Joshua Tree, deserto do Mojave, mas sim na Route 190, próximo de uma localidade chamada Darwin, quase afastada do parque Joshua Tree cerca de 322 quilómetros. 

Quando esta árvore caiu em 2000, foi colocada no seu lugar uma placa com a frase em inglês" Have you found what you’re looking for?" 

É uma referência directa à segunda faixa deste disco que se intitula "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For".

E é por esta curiosa razão que escolho este tema para Uma Música para o Fim de Semana.

Achtung Baby - 30 anos

18 de Outubro de 1991. Dois anos após a queda do Muro de Berlim.
A Europa estava inquieta com as profundas mudanças que estavam ainda acontecer no seu âmago, na Alemanha.

Os U2 em 1987 tinham lançado Joshua Tree, na linha dos anteriores álbuns, que levou a banda irlandesa para a estratosfera em termos de reconhecimento. 

O álbum seguinte, Rattle and Hum foi mal recebido pela crítica, não tanto pelo público, mas mesmo assim os U2 tremeram. Sentiram que corriam o sério risco de estagnar o seu som num momento em que a música e o mundo estavam a passar por uma revolução, sentiam que precisavam de fazer algo diferente.

A solução passou pela reinvenção do som da banda e assim surge, em associação com o produtor Brian Eno, Achtung Baby (achtung, atenção em alemão).

Um som menos pop, mais disco, mais industrial, por vezes psicadélico. As suas letras tornam-se mais de intervenção, mais pertinentes e assertivas.

Temas como One, Misterious Ways, Who's Gonna Ride your Wild Horses tornaram-se hinos universais dos U2. Hoje faz trinta anos que este álbum foi editado.

Não sou particularmente fã de U2 mas há que reconhecer a importância pivotal de Achtung Baby na discografia da banda e no panorama da música em geral. Trinta anos depois a sua importância não está diminuída, pelo contrário, ainda soa a novo.

Nestas três décadas do sétimo álbum dos U2, fujo aos seus clássicos e prefiro The Fly. Talvez o mais "estranho" dele, onde o psicadelismo, as distorções, riffs e o experimentalismo de Achtung Baby estão mais presentes.
