Em 1986, os britânicos The Communards, liderados por Jimmy Sommervile, mostrariam ao mundo o fulgor de Don't Leave Me This Way.
Mas tal como os Village People que foram esquecidos quando os Petshop Boys fizeram o cover Go West, que pela dimensão do sucesso obtido fizeram esquecer o grupo original, também os The Communards em 1986 pulverizaram os verdadeiros autores de Don't Leave This Way: Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes.

Estava-se em 1975 e a Sida ceifava as primeiras vitimas nos Estados Unidos da América.
A década de setenta não só ficaria marcada pelo surgimento da Sida mas também musicalmente pelo aparecimento do disco.
Uma das várias águas musicais por onde os Harold Melvin e Blue Notes gostavam de navegar. Isso talvez explique como uma canção que aborda o profundo desespero da perda de quem se ama, seja cantada de uma forma tão expansiva, exuberante e dançante.
